Welcome to the 2nd part of my stop on the Virtual Blog Tour for Memory in the Cells by author Luis Angel Diaz.  If you haven’t already read Small Business: Emotions & Feelings Part 1, I highly recommend it!

To continue the earlier discussion:

Many people say that business should be intellectual, but what about emotion and what should a business person do to become emotionally literate?

Since childhood, we have received many years of academic and intellectual education. On the other hand, we have received no emotional education at all. Basically, we don’t know what feelings are for. Is there any value in them? We don’t know how to deal with other people’s reactions and we are afraid of confrontation. We don’t know how to set boundaries. We say yes when we want to say no in order to be accepted or included. We usually don’t know how to deal with conflict in our work relationships, and we are in those relationships all the time!

What I have verified is that intellect without feelings creates stress and dysfunction in the workplace. The intellectual model is part of an old paradigm that has been the source of a lot of suffering for us as individuals and also as a society.

When we realize that we spend most of our lives doing our business or profession, emotional education brings quality to the workplace and people want and enjoy being part of a business. Emotionally educated people will hold their values and the values of the company in high standard.

What are the steps a business owner can take toward change and transformation?

Business owners are the first who need to immerse themselves into the new paradigm and get the emotional education they are provably lacking. When they do, they will stir the company where it needs to go, while supporting their people with the new tools. That will enable the transformation to happen. So really, it’s just a matter of following these 3 steps:

  1. Get your own emotional education
  2. Facilitate the emotional education of the people working for you
  3. Enjoy the changes!
