Hi Charly,

I’m currently a Wishlist Member and since your wishlist certified I was wondering if I could ask you a question regarding a customization. I use Getresponse API with WLM for all of my mailing. Now many of my members are always forgetting their passwords and this leads to my members leaving and my sales dropping.

I would like to know if there is a way that when members sign up through my site, not only their first and last name, but also their username and password information could be passed along to Getresponse.
Then, I could simply tell them their username and password in all many of my followup emails making everything more convenient. Now I can understand for privacy reasons why this wouldn’t be a good idea for sites that harbored any real private info, but my site isn’t like that so privacy related issues really isn’t a problem. Is there anyway that I could possibly have this setup?

Thanks. I look forward to hearing from you.

Regards,
Nicholas Gregory

  1. Hi Nicholas,

This may be possible – you would have to capture the password entered at time of registration and send it to GetResponse.  As far as I know, the password is not stored anywhere in the ‘clear’ – so you would have to completely rewrite the registration process to capture the information, register the user and send the information back to GetResponse.

Whilst I fully understand that members have problems remembering their passwords, I don’t recommend storing passwords in the clear in your autoresponder.  My concern is the storing and transmission of passwords in the clear.  There are two parts to this concern – one is the protection of the site owners assets, but the other is the protection of your members information.  I have managed a number of membership sites where the members have expressed a lot of concern about the passwords being accessible and readable.  It was one of the biggest concerns about WP for a long time.

You do need to consider that members may use the same email / username / password combinations for a number of things – and a compromise on your autoresponder, could leave your members highly vulnerable in other areas.

Instead, I would recommend customising your login page with detailed instructions on how your members can reset their passwords, this has had great success on other sites I’ve managed.

If you’re interested in getting a custom registration process written, or exploring the options further, please use the contact form at http://askcharlyleetham.com/about/contact-us and we can discuss scope and pricing further.

    Charly.
