Solopreneurs (solo-entrepreneurs) are highly motivated people who take an idea and create business opportunities from them.  Without a doubt, it takes work and knowledge to make that personal commitment profitable and successful solopreneurs start by asking the right questions.

Here are some of the questions successful Solopreneurs often ask themselves:

What is your passion? Passion is the driving force for any business. You are the person that will keep the company going and your desire to achieve will be of utmost importance. Commitment motivates solopreneurs through difficult tasks and will give focus to your business.

What are your strengths and weaknesses as a business person? Understanding these strengths and weaknesses will allow you to focus on what you do well, and get others in to work on what you don’t.  For example, if you struggle with numbers consider hiring an accountant.  Be honest with yourself – recognize your best attributes to help you find support for other skills that need a boost.

What is the market for your business? Successful solpreneurs create an entirely new market for a unique product or service. Other solpreneurs will research existing product markets and refine either the product or the kind of customers who might buy it.   A study of the market for your business should be thorough and focused on finding something unique that can be used for promotion.

What impacts your business? Effective solopreneurs keep track of changes in the financial trends and regulations that might restrict sales or impact taxes. New technology can make your product obsolete or allow you to tap into new developments for growth. Be aware of changes in the market.

What drives your customers to need or purchase your product/service? The next question to ask is, how can you strengthen that bond?  Research and a few simple questions at trade shows or a survey online can help you understand who your customers are and what drives their interest in your business.

Successful solopreneurs have a few key skills that aid in the task of setting up a business. These are:

  • Goal oriented
  • Motivated
  • Organized
  • Well prepared with a business plan
  • Able to understand customers and keep the appeal fresh
  • Knowledgeable about the rise and fall of economic cycles, aware that the business is more than the sum of the parts, and focus control in a few key areas.

Solopreneurs can be their own boss and create their own business model, and the best thing is that they do not need to be alone. Solopreneurs can find support online or in local communities through business associations.
