Will Facebook Be Charging For Membership?

Posted on 25. Sep, 2011 by in Facebook

While browsing my Facebook feed tonight, I saw the following status:

FACEBOOK JUST RELEASED THEIR PRICE GRID FOR MEMBERSHIP. $9.99 PER MONTH FOR GOLD MEMBER SERVICES, $6.99 PER MONTH FOR SILVER MEMBER SERVICES, $3.99 PER MONTH FOR BRONZE MEMBER SERVICES, FREE IF YOU COPY AND PASTE THIS MESSAGE BEFORE MIDNIGHT TONIGHT. WHEN YOU SIGN ON TOMORROW MORNING YOU WILL BE PROMPTED FOR PAYMENT INFO…IT IS OFFICIAL IT WAS EVEN ON THE NEWS. FACEBOOK WILL START CHARGING DUE TO THE NEW PROFILE CHANGES. IF YOU COPY THIS ON YOUR WALL YOUR ICON WILL TURN BLUE AND FACEBOOK WILL BE FREE FOR YOU. PLEASE PASS THIS MESSAGE ON IF NOT YOUR ACCOUNT WILL BE DELETED IF YOU DO NOT PAY

Of course, that got me interested – could it possible be true?  So, I checked out @Hoax-Slayers Facebook page, Urban Legends on About.com and Snopes.  All three sources refute the statement, and as one savvy commenter notes on @Hoax-Slayers page:

when you log into facebook it says on the login page : its free and will continue to be”

Thank goodness for that!

Ha ha – Facebook charging for their basic service. That would be like google charging for search. I’m sure both would love to, but it’s not something people would acept on a grand scale. Good story though :-)
